When Should You Switch Out Your Tires?
Having the right tires on your vehicle is integral to the safety of you, your passengers and those around you. But do you know when you should change your tires? Here are some tips on when it’s time to book your tire changeover in Toronto East York.
Winter Tires vs. All-Season Tires
Canadian weather requires us to have two sets of tires. A general rule of thumb for winter tires is that they should be put on once the temperature falls below 7°C and stays there for ten or more consecutive days. Winter tires are designed to add increased mobility in snow, and have deep treads that actually grip the road better in cold conditions.
All season tires work best in warm weather, and in temperatures that remain above 7°C. They are useful in both wet and dry conditions and have a lower rolling resistance that can lead to better fuel economy. They should be put on when any threat of snow or frost is gone.
Both of these tires have benefits and disadvantages to them, and neither of them should ever be used for the entire year. Having the right tires for the season is important, but so is making sure those tires are in good shape.
Do Your Tires Need to be Replaced?
Whatever type of tires you are using – your winter tires or all seasons, it’s imperative that they are in good working order. Have a look at your tires and inspect their treads. All season tires should have deeper grooves and a wide variety of voids and variations.
Winter tires actually have tread wear indicators inside of the grooves. They are essentially bars made of hard rubber that lie across the tread. When the tread is flush with the wear indicators, it’s time for new winter tires.
